“Rules” on setting up Bucket List Journal

Dear Fellow Journalers,

This journal is pretty easy to set up. I would write out your dreams/goals on the first page and perhaps a “date of completion” – say by the time I’m _  I will learn German. The cover can be anything you want as along as it reflects your bucket list. One clever person I know, drew a large bucket and had her dreams/goals spilling out of it encased in bubbles.

Anyway, I would suggest that you make several copies of your list. Post one in your home office, one at work, one on your refrigerator. These spots are the ones you look at every day and seeing your list will remind you of your personal goals.

Another suggestion is to share your list with others. Yeah, it worked in the movie! Seriously, sometimes having someone else know where you are headed helps if you become discouraged if the timetable is not working.

Finally, cross out items as you do them. Use a different color pen. And don’t be afraid to add new items – doing one thing can inspire you to do another.

Do and do not

Dear Fellow Journalers,,

Bucket Lists don’t always have to be about grandiose things/places you want to do/go. They can be simple things like be-friend a stranger, “pay-it-forward” (whatever “it” is for you). You could experience a sunset or sunrise. They are the most beautiful things we get to see and they’re free! Have you ever watched a Solar Eclipse?  or gone star-gazing? How about publishing a book or volunteering to teach a lecture?

Why not start a list of 25 things you’ve never done and wished you had? Did you finish your education or did you stop to pursue other venues or military service? Ever wish you could play the piano? or take a dance class? You could be the next great dancer in your own version of “Dancing with the stars”.

There’s an ad on tv these days of a couple with a map on the wall and one dart. The girl throws the dart and the couple is off on an unplanned vacation to Paris, Texas. Ever wanted to act in a play? Knit a scarf? Live through all 4 seasons? Volunteer at a Hospice? Fly a kite? Conquer your biggest fear?

How about sharing your bucket list with a trusted friend or relative? In the movie “The Bucket List”, Edward Cole (played by Jack Nicholson) and the man in the next bed (Carter Chambers) (played by Morgan Freeman) share Carter’s bucket list and set out on an adventure of a lifetime.

Other bucket list ideas include going on a retreat (if you choose to do this one, contact me – I know a great place!), start a movement for a cause you believe in, get closure on an unhappy event, fly first class, fly in a helicopter (scary, at least for me) meet an author, visit a castle or learn sign language.

Next week – taking  action.

Working on my list,

Sallie

Bucket List

Dear Fellow Journalers,

If you haven’t heard of “The Bucket List” it’s a list of all the goals you want to achieve, dreams you want to fulfill, and life experiences you want to experience before you die. It’s way different from a New Year’s Resolution.

Do you spend your days caught up in a flurry of activity? Do you live your days with a “it is what it is” attitude? If you’re retired, do you ever feel that life is passing you by? Do you have any goals at all??

Now, before you start getting depressed or thinking that creating a bucket list is to propel you into a race against the hands of death, think about this…

You only have this moment of time. Are you living in the moment as fully as possible?

So, now that I?’ve piqued your interest, how do you create a bucket list? Think of you past and future and ask yourself some questions:

  • What would you do if you had unlimited time, money and resources?
  • What have you always wanted to do but not done yet?
  • What are your goals and dreams?
  • Where do you want to go?
  • Are there any skills or activities you wish you knew?
  • Are there any countries you wish you could go to? ( why not get a passport this year, take a language course, research your country of choice)
  • Do you feel stuck in your current profession? (This year why not take a course in your dream job?)
  • Achieve your weight goal.( take a Waist Watcher Program or join a gym)
  • Take up a new sport.
  • Learn a new strategy game.
  • Let someone know how much they mean to you.
  • Be a mentor to someone.

These ideas are practical ones. Next week we’ll explore the other ideas for a bucket list.
