Marine Corps Birthday

Dear Fellow Journalers,

0a74b8104ce272f68a3e5708e2d56424-1

Today my husband celebrates the 240th Birthday of the U S Marine Corps.

The U S Marine Corps celebrates its 240th Birthday today. Throughout history, Marines have faced tough times and challenges from 1775 when they were founded to today. Marines have always excelled. They train hard and their training is always respected. “Send in the Marines” is not a catchy phrase.

Today, Marines from all generations gather in groups large and small to celebrate the birthday of the Corps and to reflect on the legacy and warrior ethos that they share.

The Birthday Ball is rich in tradition. The ceremony involves the reading of the first Commandant’s message, the birthday message from the current Commandant, a guest speaker and a cake cutting ceremony. The first piece of cake is given to the guest of honor. The second piece is given to the oldest Marine present. Upon receiving the second piece of cake, the oldest Marine passes the cake to the youngest Marine present signifying the passing of experience and knowledge to the young of the Corps.

Happy Birthday Marines!

~Sallie (proud wife of a retired Marine)

Just a note

Dear fellow Journalers,

I recently received a comment from a reader who said they couldn’t “find” me on Google. I took my web site down a few months ago to concentrate on my writing. You can find my cards on this link. http://www.pinterest..com/lovesstamps/

UYCJ has been up and running since Feb. 5th! That’s 64 posts published! So  I have a question. How am I doing?

Don’t be shy. Is there any content you would like to see more of?  Anything you would like me to “forget”. Many of you have commented on the pictures I have included with Random Thoughts, some of you like Perspectives, still others like the journal covers. The new year will include more Perspectives from “G”, Marybeth, and Paul as well as a new author.  Also featured will be a monthly Pursuit of Happiness Post to inspire us all.

Remember, we are all traveling this journey, some different roads , but we’re all doing our best to help each other.

~Sallie

The accidental page

Dear Fellow Journalers,

Have you ever started a page and for some reason, either the paper was wrinkled, the medium you were using didn’t work well  or nothing including your imagination seemed in sync?

Leave it and come back…..

several times !  Like life, and let’s face it the pages ARE your life, perspectives change. The more layers (experiences) you add the more interesting the page of your life.

Lessons from the radio

Dear Fellow Journalers,

The following is another one of “G’s” classics:

LESSONS FROM A RADIO

On my recent trip to Detroit, I had to drive around 150 miles in a rental car at 3am for a 6am arrival. This didn’t bother me in the least, as I have long preferred to make long drives at this time to avoid traffic.

Another thing I like about it is that I LOVE to use my car as a classroom. I simply pop in a tape or CD from my vast collection, and somehow always manage to learn something useful.

For this particular ride I stopped in that evening at a local bookstore and bought a “book on tape” that I’ve been meaning to read. I was set.

So the morning of I arrived at the car rental place and picked up my rental. While driving out I discovered the horror! NO TAPE, NO CD! All the unit had was an AM-FM RADIO!

Now let me tell you: ALL that’s on FM radio at that time of day (3am) are either talk shows, or news. Let me tell you something further– THE PEOPLE WHO CALL IN TO TALK SHOWS AT THAT HOUR ARE WEIRD! AND THE SUBJECTS THEY WANT TO TALK ABOUT ARE WEIRDER!

Frantically, I pushed buttons. I think I hit EVERY FM station available and could find NOTHING worth listening to. I sat back and wondered how I would cope with the rest of the trip at this ungodly (even for me) hour.

Then I remembered that the radio also had the AM frequency. I haven’t listened to AM radio in a LONG time. But I was desperate, and so I switched over to the AM frequency.

Guess what? The very first station I hit on AM was an “oldies” station! There they were. The sounds of my youth. Beach Boys! Martha and the Vandellas, etc! The sounds of my youth that I LOVE! There, in the privacy of my car surrounded only by the dark, I burst into song. And I happily bopped down the road, singing in my terrible voice, having a ball, and crewing up 150 miles of highway! Happy as a clam! The trip was over in no time.

Later, after time to contemplate, I got a life lesson from the experience—

How many of us waste time changing from station to station when what we REALLY  need is a change of frequency? How many of us search uselessly through one area, when we really need another? It’s EASY to change stations, but VERY hard to change frequencies.

THINK ABOUT IT!
