Be still and know I am God

Dear Fellow Journalers,

Have you ever met someone who “walks with God?” Someone who talks about their experiences with God as if He was present in their life. There’s a line from a TV show that is appropriate here: “There are some people who believe there exists a secret book…”  If there was such a book that would help you not only recognize God in your life but in others as well would you read it? Would you be able to sit quietly somewhere to read it, free from the distractions of everyday life?

The book is in your hands right now- it’s your Prayer Journal.

As you write and re-read your entries, you can see your growth as a Christian. Better yet, you can also have a record of God’s blessings and goodness shown to you during times of trial. Journaling, over time becomes a conversation with God.

When we think about it, our lives are filled with complex situations and people! We can get so bogged down with housework, jobs, chores, children’s activities, etc. etc. Sometimes our lives look like giant jig saw puzzles. It takes an EXPERT like God to lovingly take the pieces of our life and fashion them into the person we are meant to be.

In order to turn off “the voices in your head” you need to tune into God. He loves you and wants to tell you of His plan for your life. You can only hear His voice in the quiet time.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  1. Set a time to journal. This could be early in the morning or in the evening.
  2. Pick a place to write that is free of distractions. You might choose your favorite chair, garden spot, library or church parking lot.
  3. Remove distractions by turning off your cell phone!
  4. You can choose to write in a journal or on a laptop. Some people have even created video journals.
  5. Surround yourself with objects that create a calm mood (if at home). A scented candle, rosary beads, shells, your Bible.
In a future post I’ll share how to start writing in your journal. Remember this is your unique faith journey. There is no right/wrong way to write your Prayer Journal.
‘Til next time,
~Sallie
