Dear Fellow Journalers,

“Your best card ever!” Don’t you just love it when someone comments on something you made? A former co-worker of mine is a baker extraordinaire. She made me a batch of her famous fudge for Christmas and I made her a Thank You card (of course). It got me to thinking about sharing.

From my earliest memory of childhood, I was taught to share. “Share your toys”, “share the crayons’, “share the cookies” and as I grew up into adulthood, the sharing of time, talent and treasure dominated my life. Today, I share my life with my beautiful family, my community and in a sense, all of you.

When I make cards I always try to think of what my recipient would like. “Would “Betty like this flower” or ” would Denise like this shade of purple”. While it is gratifying to have someone appreciate your gift it is more important, at least to me, to give the gift in the first place.

I recently read a post about the obituary written by James Rebhorn. The actor was best known for his work in the movies Scent of A Woman, Independence Day and My Cousin Vinny . He had been diagnosed with cancer (Melanoma) and before his death decided to write his own obituary. His most important legacy was his body of time, talent and treasure with his family and friends. At the end of his obit, he mentioned in passing his achievements.

The third page of my journal, by the way, is a copy of a sentiment that I really like. I would like to share it with you.

“Successful is the person who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much. Who has gained the respect of children. Who leaves the world better than they found it. Who has never lacked appreciation for the earth’s beauty. Who never fails to look for the best in others or give the best of themselves.”
