Have you smiled today?

From LucraMotives
Smiling is infectious,
you catch it like the flu.
When someone smiled at
me today, I started smiling too.
I passed around the corner,
and someone saw my grin –
When he smiled I realized,
I’d passed it on to him.
I thought about that smile,
then I realized its worth,
A single smile, just like mine,
could travel round the earth.
So, if you feel a smile begin,
don’t leave it undetected.
Let’s start an epidemic quick
and get the world infected.
From World Smile Day
Have you smiled today?

Discovering Mixed Media
I first got started thinking about “mixed media” when I became a secretary for our local “Friends of the Library” organization. Our group raises money to support the many programs our Library provides the residents (Puzzle contests, Book Sales, Cooking demonstrations etc.) One of the members is an artist who creates with altered books. The participants in her group make these gorgeous displays and I thought “why not me?” But I procrastinated! After-all, I thought, my media is paper, ink, die cuts. I’m comfortable – but I finally reasoned, we can all learn something new!
So my journal is about me learning and creating mixed media. I was daunted by the subject and, to be truthful, a little intimidated. But since the world of mixed media includes so many different materials and styles, I could not make a mistake. But I couldn’t get focused. I did give up for a while – playing solitaire on the computer, reading, even organizing but deep down inside, mixed media was still calling my name. So, I decided to get creative. Taking a cue from Six Sigma (from my working career) I created a “Thinking Map”. Thinking Maps help you organize your thoughts and to visualize the possibilities. Now yours will look different from mine, because you have a different journal style and purpose.
There are different styles of “Thinking Maps”: circle, bubble, double bubble, tree, brace, flow, multi flow and bridge. The steps to take are:
-
Find a large sheet of unlined paper. I used a ( 8 1/2 ” x 11″ ) blank piece of white cardstock.
- Boil down your “challenge” to one word, in my case MIXED MEDIA. I put the words in the center on the page and circled them.
- Write down everything that comes into your head when you think of the topic for 5 minutes and just write. Draw a line to the word or phrases from where the idea came from.
- Put your pencil, pen, marker down when the timer goes off. Take a break and then come back and view the results. Find the connections and see if everything applies. What doesn’t, cross out.
- Transfer everything to a new sheet of paper. Your original thought/phrase is coming into focus.
Please refer to the following link to see different styles of Thinking Maps http:/wikihow.com/Choose-Between-Different-Styles-of-Thinking-Maps and I will let you know what my phrases are and how I started my page.

Stuck on Glue

Dear Fellow Crafters, Jounalers,
As mentioned in a previous post “Tutorials”, I am sharing with you some tips on using glue. There are many types in the market place but here are some of the ones I have used successfully.
Diamond Glaze – use for charms, crystals and shrink plastic.
Glue dots- a great tip – try not to use your fingers. These little dots are very strong. Cut the paper around the dot and use the paper as an applicator.
Double-stick tape – this I my go-to staple.
Aleene’s Jewel-it- attaches to charms like a magnet.
Foam adhesive – works well on slick surfaces.
Tacky Glue – holds like glue dots
Foam tape – double-sided in different widths. Works well on wooden shapes.
Let me know if you have a favorite and we’ll add it to the list.

Choosing a Theme and Creating a Cover
Before you go off to your local Craft Store, have you figured out:
a. What do you want from your journal?
b. What is the content of your journal?
c. When and where do you see yourself journaling?
Unless you have a goal or a vision, you won’t know where to start.
Remember, there are no rules, no restrictions and most importantly, no timetable. Many journaling sites/books start off with discussions
about materials and some inspirational prompts. Some of the types
discussed are those of the authors. Some of these
prompts and ideas will be found in future posts.
There are many types of themes for journals. Some of them are:
1. Planning (wedding, baby shower)
2. Travel
3. Music
4. Sketches or fabric swatches
5. Quotes
6. Collections
Some of mine are ( I couldn’t resist!)
1. Card ideas
2. Sentiments
3. Magazine articles
4. Stamps
5. Die Cuts
After deciding on your theme, the next thing is to decide on the
book cover. The easiest journal is a composition book. These are
the inexpensive 100 or so line paged book you used in grade school. Put one in your bag, one near your bed and one in your car.
The traditional size is 8″ x 10″. The color of the book (red, black and white or green marble) does not matter much as it only serves as a canvas for your inspirations. The reason I mention this book is because it is familiar and comforting to you. Since the idea of writing a journal is intimidating enough, the use of
the composition book of old is like wearing a favorite piece of jewelry to an interview.
Your collage elements will be determined by your theme. For purposes of discussion, let’s say I was going to create a journal about my discovering mixed media. The steps are: sorting elements,
staging and starting small and planning big.
‘Til next time,
~Sallie
