4th of July

Dear Fellow Journalers,

God Bless America

During this very special and important time, our entire nation comes together with one heart, mind, and voice to celebrate the moment at the start of our country when representatives from the 13 colonies came together and signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 in Philadelphia. For this reason ,the date of the 4th of  July has been called the “Birthday of  our nation.”

Traditionally, the  day has been marked by song, parades, and fireworks all across our country. Yet, even with such joyful gatherings, our hearts will never forget those who have given their lives that freedom may still be the reality of our existence, and the pride of  our history. Men and women of all ages throughout our history have sacrificed much, from the lowly farmer who took up weapons to defend his land from the British, to the soldier in Iraq today, they all deserve our respect.

God Bless America and  its people.

Happy 4th of July!

‘Til next time,

~Sallie

Paper Daydreams The Pursuit of Happiness- Spirituality

Dear  Fellow Journalers,

I write a blog uniquelyyourscards.wordpress.com and every month I post an article entitled The Pursuit of Happiness.

While I try not to duplicate, I think this one is worth it:

July is the month of Spirituality. I’m sure that at first “glance” the idea of spirituality read religion  may seem to be out-of-place when you think of journaling but I’ll bet if you read on you’ll understand the “pull” of this topic.

For those of you who attend church, temple or other houses of worship, think back to a time when the music moved you. Sometimes a prayer, sermon or just the surroundings can inspire you. If you don’t go to church, do you watch a minister on TV?

Do you have a place that you go to reflect or pray? There’s a retreat house in CT that I have gone to for 15+ years now and people are always asking me why. “Why go so far away?” ” Why every year?” I tell them that it’s my second home. I feel close to God there and the combination of the peaceful surroundings, companionship, talks and music help me reconnect with my faith. My faith journal always accompanies me and one book. This book I will review for you on the 16th.

“We make our journeys by hope and faith; hope that our walk will be worthy of our steps and faith that we are going somewhere.”

Listen

Listen

When I ask you to listen to me and you start giving me advice, you have not done what I asked.

When I ask you to listen to me and you begin to tell me why I shouldn’t feel that way, you are trampling on my feelings.

When I ask you to listen to me, and you feel you have to do something to solve my problems, you have failed me – strange as that may seem.

Listen!  All I asked was that you listen – not talk or do – just hear me.

Advice is cheap. Ten cents will get you both Dear Abby and Billy Graham in the same newspaper.

I can do for myself. I’m not helpless – discouraged and faltering maybe – but not helpless.

When you do something for me that I can  and need to do for myself, you contribute to my fear and weakness.

But when you accept as a simple fact that I do feel what I feel, no matter how irrational, then I can quit trying to convince you and get about the business of understanding what’s behind this irrational fear.

And when that’s clear, the answers are obvious and I don’t need advice.

Irrational fears make sense when we understand what’s behind them.

Perhaps that’s why prayer works – sometimes – for some people.

God is mute. He doesn’t give advice or try to fix things.

He just listens and lets you work it out for yourself.

So please listen and hear me.

And if you want to talk, wait a minute for your turn, and then I’ll listen to you.

Paper and Fabric

Dear Fellow Journalers, Do you have a favorite piece of fabric that you can’t  bear to part with? In what seems to me, a never-ending pick up/organization of my craft room, I found a box of fabric swatches. Some were the Fat Quarters” from Joanne’s but others were snippets from my past. I found part of a sleeve from one of my favorite dresses, the logo applique from a college sweatshirt, and a picture of wildflowers from a t-shirt. “I really should do something with these” I exclaimed! So I began to think. Some people I know have made quilts from older clothing but I’m  not a quilter. Some make pictures -wait I make journals!! I did some research on attaching fabric to paper. Of course, the initial topics were about covering journals but I wanted to put fabric Into journals. In February, I posted an article Stuck on Glue which detailed some glue products you could use to attach paper, charms, etc. Finally I found this web site :  http://www.ehow.com/how_6064973_glue-fabric-paper-digital-art.html   it tells you all you need to know and you only need a few things! Scissors, fabric glue, fabric, and paper! Let me know how your journal covered pages come out! ~Sallie Copyright 204 All rights reserved.
