Wrapping myself in a book

Dear Fellow Journalers,

Wrapping myself in a book

Wrapping myself in a book

Let’s face it, over the course of your reading career, you’ve been devoured by a book. You plucked it off a library or bookstore shelf and the title or brief description caused you to exclaim “I have to read this!” You sat  down with your beverage and immediately were drawn into the characters, the plot, the time frame and time literally slipped away.

When I was a youngster, my favorite thing to do was to curl up in a tree in our backyard and read Nancy Drew books. I remember reading The Wind in the Willows under the bed covers with a flashlight one summer night when I was on vacation in North Carolina.

Some books you have to read slowly. Undaunted Courage by Stephen  E. Ambrose is a book that I am reading now. It is about the adventures of Lewis and Clark. It is fascinating. I find myself drawn into the lives of those explorers and  the sights and experiences they had for the first time.

Argo, How the CIA and Hollywood pulled off the most audacious rescue in history by Antonio Mendez is about the Iranian Hostage Crisis.  This is another type of slow-read book. “365 Journal Writing Ideas” by Rossi Fox begins with a quote from Maud Hart Lovelace. “Isn’t it mysterious to begin a new journal? I can run my fingers through the fresh clean pages but I cannot guess what the writing on them will be.” I’ve used this book all year  and savored it.

Words on a  page, no matter how written, can inspire you to action. The words you write in your journal are for the most part, only  for you. They are your life and history.

Have you ever gone back to an older journal and wondered if you should re-write passages? Personally, I don’t think this is a good idea.No matter how long its been since you wrote in that journal, you’ve grown and your perspective has changed. Your NEW words reflect that so when you wrap yourself in that book or journal, remember to savor the moments.

Mr. Sun

Dear  Fellow Journalers,

In what is fast becoming a tradition, one of our contributor’s  G has asked to write his Perspectives once a month. Here is a classic:

MR SUN

I can’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t get up with the sun, and usually before it. I mean it– all my life, Sats and Sunds usually included. I even have a little game I play. I make some coffee and go to the window and wait for old Mr. Sun to arrive. (Somedays he’s late– Somedays I am. We give each other hell for being late too! He has some bullshit story about having to travel around the world to meet me!)

Anyway, every morning I ask him”What do you have in store for me today Old Man?” His answer is always the same “Opportunity Kid, Opportunity.”

Can’t you answer better than that? I ask. There is no better answer than that! he responds.

This little dialog, conducted daily, makes me want to answer the order given by Capt. Picard of the Starship Enterprize: Let’s see what’s out there!

And everyday it comes: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. Everything that comprises L*I*F*E! And all the time, Mr. Sun watches and observes. Mr Sun himself never really knows what he brings with him. And often I wonder what he thinks of my life. He’s seen every day of it. He reminded me just last week how old I was getting. He shone down on a picture of me taken when I was two. We (my parents and I) were on vacation. Damn, I was cute! Sandy blond hair, big blue eyes, etc.

What ever happened to that kid? I asked Mr. Sun. I kept going through space! he replied, and every day I did it, you got a day older.

Hey Mr Sun, speaking of getting older, care to tell me how many more morning meetings we have left?

Sorry Kid, no can do– but I will tell you something special.

Ok what’s that Mr Sun?

Well kid, when you can no longer come to these meetings, I’ll still be showing up. And when I pass over that tiny green spot that comprises your little bit of immortality on Earth, I always send extra rays to those of you who said Good Morning AND Good Night to me. Let’s you know I appreciated you.

I appreciate you too Mr. Sun. BUT, coffee’s finished, the day awaits.

Hey kid, by the way, I saw you eyeing the pretty girl yesterday!

Mr. Sun! YOU went and put that tan and those TAN LINES on her, so don’t blame me!

Alright kid, fair enough– let’s go see what’s out there for you today! Remember now– all I promise is OPPORTUNITY– the rest is up to you.

Daydreams – Summer is over

Dear  Fellow Journalers,

Summer is over and it is time to take all those photos and put them in scrapbooks, rather than the most convenient box you can find. I know you are wondering why I am talking about scrapbooking and  not journaling, well, scrapbook journaling is actually a memory book of pictures. Why not write about the feelings and emotions of the pictures?

Remember the 5 w’s you learned in school? Who, what, when, where why and how?

So, if I had a picture of a birthday party, my scrapbook journal would state:

“L”, Grandpappy, Grandma, “D” and “A” are celebrating “L” 2nd birthday on________ . “J”, “L’s” Godmother took the picture. We at ______ and we are laughing because “L” liked the box our gift came in!

Or how about the day you graduated from college? Your parents were so proud of you. Your father had just said _____

Or how about that camping trip to ____ You actually liked sleeping in a tent!

Or that fish you caught really was ____long!

Try this and see if your memories are triggered by the pictures, long after the event.
