Why is gardening good for you?

Dear Fellow Journalers,

I have to admit it, I’m not a gardener. Oh, I have planted flowers and shrubs in my past life, but I’ve not got the patience for it. When I decided to write about the different types of journals that people write and found garden journals on the list of favorite types I was intrigued. I had no idea how popular they are. I discovered that most garden journalers write more than just what they plant. They realized during the process of planning, buying, tilling, planting and weeding that the very acts were good for them.

So, for all you garden journalers out there, here’s a consensus of why gardening is good for you:

1.  Beats depression: There was a study done on individuals who showed the common symptoms of depression. The subjects were instructed to tend a garden for 6 weeks. The very acts of digging, pruning, weeding, watering and observing “the fruits of their labor” gave them hope and a new zeal for life.

2.  Gardening is low-pact exercise – a new way to lose weight and lower blood pressure.

3.  All that digging and bending develops all the major muscles in the back and legs. You develop a stronger posture.

4.  Spending time (at least 1/2 hour a day) increases your intake of Vitamin D.

5.  Gardening relieves stress.

6.  A sense of calm becomes evident when you immerse yourself in nature.

7.  If you’re addicted to your devices, gardening will help you wean from your habit.

8.  Everyone is embracing the idea of organic foods. If you grow your own fruits/vegetables, you know you’ll be eating healthier.

9.  Besides eating healthier, you’ll save money at the grocery store.

10.  Your neighbors will appreciate your flowers and extra tomatoes and you’ll start new friendships.

11.  Tending to your own plot of land can encourage feelings of gratitude and a sense of awe as you come to admire creation and beauty of nature.

‘Til next time,

~Sallie

Prayer quotes

Prayer

Dear Fellow Journalers,

I won’t begin to tell you how many prayer quotes there are!Every religious sect has hundreds. So I hope these few will serve as a stepping off point for you to explore (share if you wish) as you travel your faith journey.

~Sallie

Pope Francis says that prayer is like “speaking to a friend; in prayer one opens one’s heart.”

“The value of consistent prayer is not that He will hear us, but that we will hear Him.”  William McGill

“Saying one’s prayers Isn’t exactly the same thing as praying.” L.M. Montgomery -“Anne of Green Gables”

“God speaks in the silence of the heart. Listening is the beginning of prayer.” Mother Teresa

Quote Journal 2nd request

Dear Fellow Journalers,

It has been almost a month since I sent out this request to you. I really  need your help!!! Unfortunately, only a few of you responded. Please read the post below that I sent out in March and respond asap. Time is getting short and if I can’t get enough responses, the old adage “what you see is what you get” will be the norm. I really want this blog to be interactive as we are all on a journaling adventure (life) and we all can share each other’s stories.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sallie

When I began this year’s posts on content journaling I was nervous. How would you, my followers react? It was with some trepidation, that the posts began to evolve and take on lives of their own. To my delight, I discovered that ‘you all” shared and commented!

It is in this spirit, that I come to you to ask a favor. The June posts will feature Quotes and Inspirational journaling. A lot of my quote journal contains excerpts from literature, but there are so many more topics out there! If each of you contributed 3 quotes or excerpts of texts with the source and your e-mail address, I will share them on this blog. So, please put your thinking caps on and share with all of us! I need your submissions before June 1st. You can email me at uniquelyyourscraftjournal@outlook.com

How to start writing your Prayer Journal and Bonus Tutorial video on Faith Journals

Dear Fellow Journalers,

There are some people who suggest that a prayer journal is a list of people in you life who need God’s help in some way. “They say” “Write the person’s name, their specific need and ask God’s help for them.” It sounds like a written prayer chain doesn’t it?

There are some people who suggest that a prayer journal is a list of YOUR needs – a type of venting process.

There are some people who suggest that a prayer journal is a listing of prayers, hymns or quotes that inspire you.

There are some people who underline psalms or passages in the Bible and re-write them in their journal and use the phrase as a prompt.

All of the above can be used in a Prayer Journal. Your journal tells the story of your life as a Christian and however you decide to tell it is okay.

How do you start? Start with a prayer praising God for His goodness and forgiveness for your sins. Ask God to reveal what He wants you to know and understand.

You should always date your pages and then list what is on your mind. Choose a scripture verse or story and write about it. If you practice mindfulness this would be a good time to stop and mediate. Write down what thoughts God is impressing on your mind. Finish with a prayer of thanks.

I wanted to share this tutorial with you today. It runs about 20 minutes.
