The Month of Generosity

Dear Fellow Journalers,

December is the month of Generosity. The true spirit of the season lies in the giving of our time, talents and treasure. It is also a time of festivity and fun. When thinking of how to give of ourselves, there are examples all around us. Here are some that I have witnessed myself:

  1. A couple I know was downsizing their home of 40+ years. They had accumulated boxes of business supplies (copy paper, pens, staples, paper clips) They packed everything up and called an elementary school not far from their hometown and donated everything.

  2. The owner of a florist shop donates her time teaching flower arranging to seniors at her local  senior center. The crafters then take their creations and sell them at their annual holiday fair. One year the proceeds helped a member who had just lost her home to a fire.

  3. Several women pack lunches for a “Midnight Run” to feed the homeless in a nearby city. Incidentally, they do this all the time, not just at Christmas.

  4. Local teens read to youngsters at the library.

  5. The owner of a small business donates his money (without fanfare) to help build a home for a disabled veteran.

The list goes on and I am sure you can add to it.  In case you want to get in the spirit of generosity, here are some books to get you started:

Let’s all try to live lives of Generosity this month!

P.S. “The Bridge” will be broadcast on Dec. 6th at 8pm on the Hallmark Channel. If it is as good as the book, it will be a winner!

How to find Inspiration for writing

Dear Fellow Journalers,

It’s nearly the end of the year and the holiday season begins tomorrow. Have you ever wondered if your writing will suffer if you immerse yourself in the holiday experience? Will you have empty pages in your journal? How will you ever be inspired? Journal prompts are great but let’s put them aside for a moment and try something new:

  1. Books – I tend to read several a month. I usually write down sections of text or highlight them (if reading on my Kindle).

  2. Movies – Sometimes, while watching a movie, a character will say something so interesting that I’ll say “That would make a great blog post!” or “I have to write that in my journal!”

3. History – Great people in history can inspire you to greatness. Some of my favorite people are Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Helen Keller and George Washington. When you read the biography of someone and see the trials and successes of their life’s journey you come away with inspiration to tackle your own difficulties.

  1. Success Stories – Finding out how others who had an idea and “ran with it” inspires me to pick up my pen!

‘Til next time,

~Sallie

What to write in a Holiday Card

Dear Fellow Crafters,

In my past life, I was stymied by the blank page in a greeting card. I mean, what the heck should I write??!! I solved my problem by writing down sentiments in a journal which then expanded into typing and printing them for future cards. Now, when I am pressed to write something witty or sentimental or funny, for that matter, I just refer to my Sentiment Journal. Here are some greetings for your holiday cards. Please feel free to share:
