My Birthday

Dear Fellow Journalers,

There are 2 Seeds of Thought that I want to share with you. Both are very appropriate for today:

“Start every day like it’s your birthday.”

“Life is uncharted territory. It reveals its story one moment at a time.”

Leo Buscaglia

….and yes, today is my birthday! My life in print now includes all of you so I wanted to say thanks for your comments, your support and your guidance during this year. I hope that my posts and those of my fellow authors have helped you on your journey of discovering your life.

Over the Rainbow

Dear Fellow Journalers,

Another post by G. Enjoy!

~Salliedouble-rainbow5

Remember that beautiful old song: “Somewhere over the rainbow, birds fly high, if birds fly over the rainbow, why then oh why can’t  I?”

I’d like to suggest you can! Oh not in every thing and all the time. We all have our weak points. Take me for example: I’m terrible at math. From the earliest days of long division to Trig and Aniline Calculus, whatever side of the brain handles that, well mine went out to lunch one day and never came back to work. But I never let it get me down. So I’d never be an engineer or rocket scientist, let somebody else do that, but I did have talent in History and Writing. So I decided that limits are barriers we set on ourselves, and I decided it was time for me to fly over the rainbow.

My first manuscript entitled “The Siege at Sevastopol” was not exactly a page turner. It lacked the two things every good piece needs: Heart and directed purpose. So I went out to try again, and with some mentors to help, my new manuscript entitled “The Siege at Sevastopol as Compared with the Siege at Khe Sahn” doubled my readership. These two events, over a hundred years apart, had both much and little in common.  It started talk among true military historians, it even started debates. I was now the toast of the town. Invited to speak and lecture. I had managed to fly over the rainbow!

My next challenge is to fly over the moon. I don’t know if I’ll make it, but if you drive by my home one night and notice the lights on in the Study, you’ll find that crazy bastard friend of yours is trying to write the piece that will build the rocket!

By the way, did I mention that the view from the top of the rainbow is FANTASTIC! Much better than that you see with both feet on earth. It invigorates your spirits and allows you to put aside the weights that have been holding you down.

So what rainbow is yours to fly over? What’s holding you back from doing it? Strengthen your wings and come up to where the air is rare!

So in the words of that old Frank Sinatra song: COME FLY WITH ME, LET’S FLY, LET’S FLY AWAY!

Memory Journal for Mom

Dear Fellow Journalers,

Sometimes it’s hard to find a gift for your Mom that she will cherish for years to come, but the memory journal is definitely one. To make this you’ll need a few days to plan out what you’ll write.

You will need the following items:

  • blank journal book
  • pen
  • your memories (see below)
  • collection of favorite quotes
  • small mementoes
  • glue stick
  • photos

Start by brainstorming memories of special times/events shared with your Mom. Some of these could be the one-on-one shopping, special lunches, Mother advice times, or if you are a Mom, the first time she held your child. After you have about 20-50 moments jot them down in a notebook.

At this point, you can decorate your covers. You can refer back to my previous posts for ideas. Start writing in the journal. I started my Memory Journal by writing a letter to my Mom and telling her why I started the journal for her.  I included the reasons why I enjoyed the moments with her, what I learned from her and included other family members in the particular memory. I tried to keep the events in a chronicle order and included pictures/photos with each event. That notebook came in handy because it took me several days to write everything!

Be sure to include a beautiful card with your gift!

Happy Mother’s Day!

‘Til next time,

~Sallie

Prompts for your Memory Jar- writing a letter

Dear Fellow Journalers,

How long has it been since you wrote a letter? I don’t mean an email either. I got to thinking about that topic earlier this month. I remember a time before the internet (yes, I am ancient!) when I actually used nice stationery and a pen to write letters. Nowadays, the most writing with a pen that I do is writing sentiments inside greeting cards!

Write a Letter to:

  • Write a letter to someone you need to forgive.
  • Write a letter to someone who believed in you even when you didn’t believe in yourself.
  • Write a letter to be read by each of your loved ones after you’ve passed away.
  • Write a fan letter to your favorite actor/actress.
  • Write a letter to the editor of your favorite magazine telling them what features you would like to see included in the magazine.
  • Is there something you’re reluctant to tell someone?  Write a letter to help y0u organize your thoughts.
  • finally, write a letter to yourself. Tell yourself what you are going through emotionally at this time, what you want to do and what you have accomplished. If you want to write down a secret wish for the future.

‘Til next time,

~Sallie
