Dear Fellow Journalers,
The last days of any year for all of us, is a time to review the events and opportunities of the last year. For me, it’s a time to organize my craft room after the Christmas Card-making blitz and it’s a time to eat way too many cookies!
One of the things I have discovered this past year is that I’d forgotten how much I like to write. A good friend of mine recently told me how surprised she was when she first read some of my posts. She had no idea that I wrote and that she looked forward to my weekly paper adventures.
Since one of my goals this year is to reignite the flame of creating, I decided to research the topic “breaking Crafter’s Block.” We all go through it – “dry spells” they call them. The stack of watercolor paper that sits untouched, the just bought “gotta have” dies, embossing folder or newest acrylic paint color – they all sit waiting for us to create something new from the blank canvas on our desks.
We desperately want to create but we don’t know what and we know we won’t be happy until we do create something. Crazy, isn’t it?
So fellow journalers, I’ve decided to devote the first post of every month to a few words on spiritual and crafting inspiration to help you unlock your potential for the month. I’ll be using Henry S. Miller’s “The Serious Pursuit of Happiness” for the spiritual part and many of my journal prompts for the crafting parts.
January is a month of hope and plans. Journaling is one of the first tools used to teach aspiring writers how to tap into their creative flow. Resolve to write one positive goal each morning of each day of January and plan to make the plan a reality. Old photos (scanned, if possible) are great starting points and if you take the time to create your cover first, you will have to write now! Don’t make this a chore – open your eyes and heart for the possibilities that await you! There was a TV personality that said that she finds inspiration all over even in commercials! I wonder if she was talking about color concepts. Journals can be made from composition books you can find at dollar stores. Cover them with patterned paper, stickers, and flowers – virtually anything you want. But beware – making journals can be addictive – almost like eating chocolate chip cookies!

Dear Fellow Journalers,
A “take” on composition journalers. Enjoy!
~Sallie
I’m really into working on my art journal again. I am using composition books as I did for my first one. I found this old tutorial I did for my niece last summer. I am posting here for anyone interested in starting their own. You can see morejournal junk examples in my flickr album. Here you go!
I start with putting wax paper down under each page to prevent sticking, mess, etc…

Then I use gesso to prepare the page. Gesso is like white paint primer. You can find in painting isle. It helps give page some body and prevents paint from soaking in. Please note though that you will not have “perfect” results in a composition book. There will still be some wrinkling, buckling, but I assure you they are fun to work in and great as a art journal!
So, take your cheapo brush and dip into gesso…

There…now let that dry…won’t take long, believe me..gesso dries quite fast…
Now, i squirt paint right onto the page (ok, so this is not scientific or anything)

This time I decide to use an old plastic card to scape it around the page…

Ok, there, that looks like enough paint…are we having fun yet?

Ok, that’s better. I used my nieces fave color here…
ok, now I wait for it to dry or use my craft dryer if I don’t want to wait…
Then I start to glue on some collage bits…(save those scrap leftovers now, they are great for this!)

I love using paint pens on my pages so I start writing and swirling around here…

Ok, here’s a finished spread (not done all at one sitting, you can do a bit now, then go back and add more..

Here’s the cover of my first “journal junk” journal made last summer I believe…

Hope you liked this tutorial. I encourage kids both young and old to make an art journal and just use it as your regular diary or a “dream” journal, quote journal, whatever you like. It’s lots of fun to see the pages fill up.
I’ll post my fave art journal links in my next art journal post. Now, off I go to paint some more pages!

Dear Fellow Journalers,
Let’s face it, over the course of your reading career, you’ve been devoured by a book. You plucked it off a library or bookstore shelf and the title or brief description caused you to exclaim “I have to read this!” You sat down with your beverage and immediately were drawn into the characters, the plot, the time frame and time literally slipped away.
When I was a youngster, my favorite thing to do was to curl up in a tree in our backyard and read Nancy Drew books. I remember reading The Wind in the Willows under the bed covers with a flashlight one summer night when I was on vacation in North Carolina.
Some books you have to read slowly. Undaunted Courage by Stephen E. Ambrose is a book that I am reading now. It is about the adventures of Lewis and Clark. It is fascinating. I find myself drawn into the lives of those explorers and the sights and experiences they had for the first time.
Argo, How the CIA and Hollywood pulled off the most audacious rescue in history by Antonio Mendez is about the Iranian Hostage Crisis. This is another type of slow-read book. “365 Journal Writing Ideas” by Rossi Fox begins with a quote from Maud Hart Lovelace. “Isn’t it mysterious to begin a new journal? I can run my fingers through the fresh clean pages but I cannot guess what the writing on them will be.” I’ve used this book all year and savored it.
Words on a page, no matter how written, can inspire you to action. The words you write in your journal are for the most part, only for you. They are your life and history.
Have you ever gone back to an older journal and wondered if you should re-write passages? Personally, I don’t think this is a good idea.No matter how long its been since you wrote in that journal, you’ve grown and your perspective has changed. Your NEW words reflect that so when you wrap yourself in that book or journal, remember to savor the moments.

Dear Fellow Journalers,
Well, I have procrastinated long enough! You’ve seen posts about covers, what you want in your journal, what to collect and now is the time to begin! Now, don’t think I’ve been idle all this time- I organized, I’ve made Easter cards, I’ve researched, I’ve played computer solitaire – WAIT – does this sound like PROCRASTINATION?? Oh, yeah, big time.
So I took a clue from a fellow journaler whose blog I follow. I opened my beautifully created cover and stared at the EMPTY PAGE! Finally, I took the plunge and wrote “about me” with contact information on the first page. I figured if I really personalize my journal, I’d be more committed to it.
I started thinking about the act of writing and the pleasure I get when re-reading what I’ve written. I could do this. Whenever I got distracted, I looked at my focus page. Oh, I forgot to tell you about that!
When I was pregnant, many years ago, I attended pre-natal classes at the local hospital. The nurses told us that we needed a focus picture to help us concentrate. It had to be of significance to us. Now over the years, that picture has changed! When I think of things that inspire me now, lighthouses, sunsets, beaches, children playing, nature – these things inspire me now. Last year, while driving home from work, I saw the most amazing sunset over the city. I don’t have a camera phone, so I couldn’t take a picture of it, but I felt that I might find one similar on Pinterest and I did. I posted it just now. My focus picture is a beautiful picture painted by God, a gift for all of us to see and share. The beautiful blended colors remind me of my life as a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, volunteer, blogger, card-maker. It was a perfect focus picture and it also reminded me of why I was sharing my journey with all of you and why telling you my story is so important.
